If you are an avid Internet user, you’ve probably heard of that catchy electro-dance track “Cebuana”, which has gone viral over the past few months.
If you’ve been infected with the track’s contagious beats, you might have wondered what the song is about. The singer says that the English-Cebuana song’s meaning is up to you, as the listener and interpreter. You give your own meaning to it.
The voice behind “Cebuana” is Karencitta a.k.a Karidad, a 22-year-old Filipina singer with Cebuana roots. Currently, she is based in Los Angeles, California.
Since the age of 4, Karencitta, or Karen Ann Cabrera, has grown fond of music, taking voice lessons as a hobby. She ventured out the showbiz industry for a while, winning GMA Eat Bulaga’s Little Miss Philippines and was crowned grand finalist and Little Miss Friendship 2000.
It wasn’t until several years later when she released an independent single entitled “Fckroun”. Her latest release, “Cebuana”, followed shortly after. Little did she know that “Cebuana” would spearhead her career. She did not expect the track to go viral. To her surprise, it garnered 1 million views on YouTube in only a span of 24 hours. And ever since its release on November 2, 2017, it has held the #1 spot on Spotify’s Most Viral Music and on music channel MYX’s daily countdown and has over 3 million views on YouTube to date.
Today, January 29, 2018, following a press conference, Karencitta officially signed a management contract with Viva Entertainment’s Boss Vic Del Rosario.
When asked why she chose Viva, she answered, “the million dollar question is ‘Why not?’, noting that Viva showed interest in her even before Cebuana became a big hit. “When I was nobody, Viva already wanted me”.
This is just the beginning of Karencitta’s journey in the industry. with her aiming for big things in the global scale, we are bound to see and hear more from her.
Once she returns to LA, she’ll begin working on an EP and an album. But while she’s here, Karencitta will be joining James Reid and Nadine Lustre in their “Revolution” concert on February 9. 2018 will also see her start filming her first big project with Viva, a movie entitled “Indak”, with Yassi Pressman and Ella Cruz.
